Learn through play and count objects from nature

I'm always trying to find ways to incorporate learning into playful activities and even more so when I include objects from nature. Kids are more willing and more engaged when learning through play.  So the other day the kiddos were busy drawing with sidewalk chalk but after a while they started to get bored and a little antsy.  So I drew a grid with the numbers 1-5 in it and asked the kids to find something that was 1 or 2 etc.. They had a lot of fun with this and repeated it over and over using different objects found around the yard.  It was also a bit of a challenge finding 5 of the same things, I could see the wheels turning as they wandered the yard looking and counting.

This activity can also be done at school during recess time or even during math time.  Who says you can't have your math class outside?
